Review of Robert Herjavec’s YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A SHARK

I was chosen by Robert Herjavec of ABC’s Shark Tank fame (yes, that’s the one, sitting to the far right of your screen every Friday night at 8:00 p.m.) to be a #CYSAmbassador for his newest title (released on May 17th, 2016), YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A SHARK, Creating Your Own Success. 

Part of the deal was – I got to score an advanced copy of his book, and I was to write an honest review after reading it. Thing is, I felt the need to dually review this title.

What do I mean by that? Easy!

I’m a writer myself, and I’m also an entrepreneur. So consequently, my review is being written as both a writer and an entrepreneur. So there, I’ve laid my review’s foundation. Now, onto my review!

TITLE: You Don’t Have To Be A Shark

REVIEW:

There is an old adage in the publishing industry; ‘There’s nothing to writing. All you have to do is sit down at the typewriter and bleed.’- Ernest Hemingway.  No, they aren’t speaking literally, but figuratively. However, Mr. Herjavec does just that. He opens his heart and soul to the readers of this book. Years of experience are apparent from the very first page. Expertise that you can put to work for yourself from DAY ONE.

The majority of the text focuses on sales. No. Not the kind of pressurized selling that you probably thought of as you read that word. Honestly, it’s probably not even the sort of sales that you may have studied in business school.

It’s the kind of selling that you probably don’t even realize you do every, single day. However, the text isn’t so dry and convoluted that it’s a struggle to get through – we’ve all read those sorts of books probably while we were in school. Be honest with yourself, some of those books were quite closely related to torture, weren’t they? This title is NOT THAT.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A SHARK is very simply laid out, and very easy to understand. It’s rather more like you’re sitting down to have a glass of lemonade with Mr. Herjavec and chatting. Because of that, I’ll give this title a label of narrative non-fiction. Read the book and have a personal conversation with Mr. Herjavec himself, including his extensive expertise. In fact, I finished the entire title in one day.

WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS TITLE? 

YES! Absolutely yes. 

TO WHOM WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS TITLE? 

Is everyone to broad of an answer? I saw your eyebrows mashing together from all the way over here, so let me narrow it down a bit. If you are an entrepreneur: YES! If you are climbing the corporate ladder: YES! If you are a writer: YES! Especially if you are interested in writing narrative non-fiction. Why other writers? Here’s a hint, every writer files taxes. And the vast majority of them file taxes as a SOLE PROPRIETORSHIP, which is also used in some instances as a business/entrepreneurship bracket. That means, in a sense of the word, if you’re a writer – you’re also an entrepreneur. Not to mention so much of the title’s narrative can be used by writers too – don’t you want to SALE your novel to a big publisher? But first, you have to SALE your novel to an editor. And even before that, you have to SALE your novel to a literary agent. After you have your story published, you have to SALE yourself to your readers. SALE. SALE. SALE. SALE.

FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THE TEXT?

Don’t ask why – just take some time to think about this. If you want to know what Mr. Herjavec thinks about it – you’ll have to read his book. No spoilers from me! And, I’m not even going to tell you where it is in the text. That way you can’t cheat.

In conclusion, the subtitle of this book – CREATE YOUR OWN SUCCESS – perfectly fits the text. If you’d like to succeed in you life ‘ad’ventures do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book. As you read, you’ll also enjoy an intimate portrait of the great shark himself; Robert Herjavec. The advice and skills you’ll receive are priceless.
